Technically, we have short bolts for the compound crossbow, and self-propelled 'Lightning bolts' for the Iglomet rifle, both of which already do everything you could want from a bow

But for purists and toxophilists, it would be nice to see a full size silenced compound bow with matched arrows in the game...  Very Happy

For a long time, I have suggested that hand-crossbows as in Deus-Ex with tranquilliser darts could be a cool feature, especially where neutral or friendly may have picked up something MO has been tasked to get. If the code also allowed forgetfulness of the shooter, then that would help. There is also a STALKER mod that allows for prisoners to be taken and then they become friendlies; similiarly in one of the sequels - I think SCOP, some Monolithians are turned into Freedomers by the Army player thus they could be first tranquilised in Ssoup. It should be possible with bows & mini-crossbows would be nice. I have not found the Norman crossbow appear except in the spawn menu, and the explosive arrows are quite rare too. Surely by their nature all bows are silent. For without the silent quality, one might as well use a firearm. The English longbow was very lethal over a considerable distance and a non-lethal take-down would use the Iglomet perhaps, a mini-crossbow works well in close quarter or confined space. Some crossbows could release more than one bolt at a time. Interesting subject for modders, methinks afro pirat

You'll find Norman's stashed crossbow
Spoiler:

Yes, bows are much quieter than firearms, but they still make a recognisable noise as the limbs and string settle down after the arrow leaves the bow

But matching the arrows as near as possible to the bow, fine tuning of the bow to the arrows (a compound bow allows this), and fitting dampeners to the limbs and strings to absorb vibration will reduce this sound to a much shorter, quieter, and less traceable thud... Suspect

Hi Sword, Given this info re the sound from bow strings, it seems that crossbows may be better. Of course either will be quiter than a silenced rifle, and at a distance the target would be less likely still to hear it, but given the Game's dynamics, I know NPCs don't react to silenced firearms, I cannot recall if NPCs react to bow/crossbow sounds. If you test this out, please post the results. I am waiting for the next update before replaying.

As with all weapons it's down to choice, and both compound bows and crossbows have different advantages and disadvantages over the other

I only mentioned the sound of a 'silenced' bow in case anyone was thinking of creating the animation, and recording the sound of a short, sharp thud over a reverberating twang... silent

There is definitely reason why modern armies still use them to quietly disarm sentries...

Bad news is arrows in SS are very pricey and you can get 3 at once max + not recyclable (as in reality sometimes).

Hi Musketeer, I agree re arrows, perhaps if some items sold by traders such as ammunition were available in infinite amounts, thus the player couod decide how many rounds or clips to buy of all ammo that the trader has on show, this would be more realistic since ammo in armories generally is stored in large boxes, albeit sometimes packaged as per images in the game.

With arrows, there are two types: exploding and normal. It would help if the exploding versions once available, could be fired from all versions available. Regards, TrueB.

To my knowledge the long Iglomet 'Lightning bolt' is self-powered for straight flight over distance, but not exploding

The shorter bolt is for the crossbow

They're not interchangeable because they're designed for totally different types of weapon

And technically, neither are arrows. Arrows are only used with full size bows which do not accept the much shorter crossbow bolts. Again, a different type of weapon...

Hi Sword, Yes, bolts are different from arrows. Whilst I don't know of any modded versions, the sort of bow used in the recent "Tomb Raider" and iirc one of the Bourne movies, would make sense as a full longbow is not the easiest item to go into battle with. But whilst arrows and bolts are not interchangeble (the iglomet ammo seems exclusive to it), the arrows available are fired from what looks like a crossbow, ie the one with fixed scope but may be a bow.
I suggest that as arrows are available later in the game with explosive tips, then any bolts that exist could receive similar coding, please. The handheld crossbow which featured in Deus Ex 1, might be cool as their tips had knock out drugs, ie not killing. This could enable a timed in out without necessarily alerting targets to the shooter, and thus could include neutrals and friendlies. Regards, TrueB.

To avoid confusion with the real bolts and arrows in the game, the description for the Iglomet's 'Lightning bolts' has now been rewritten to better describe their form and function

I need to retract a earlier statement regarding explosive arrows, after investigating all the bow and ammo combinations currently in the game

There are two types of compound crossbow - the standard bow, and the low-profile stealth bow you get f
Spoiler:

Each is able to shoot (not 'fire'!)  two types of ammo - standard bolts, and the 'Superior' red explosive bolts. These are the same size and interchangeable

You can tell the difference once the bolts hit, but don't expect a spectacular 'boom' from the explosive one, a la 'Rambo - First Blood'. This is, after all, stealth ammo...

Currently there are no full-size bows, nor arrows in the game. The only ammo that looks and behaves like an arrow is the specialized, armor-piercing, self-powered shaft for the Iglomet (aka 'Lightning bolts') which you'll need for
Spoiler:
The description of each is being rewritten to take all this into account, and avoid any further confusion

Thanks to TrueB for raising the issue

Thanks for researching it Sword and having it recorded. But the superior flights are less powerful than iso-ammo which has more flare too, though I fully agree that if the tip did damage as in AP then there would be no flare, just damage to a non-live target and massive damage to eg a mutant, but there is not at present. I don't know how our modders increase damage of ammo but if the non explosive has damage equivalent to a modern version, one would expect extra damage from an explosive one, and hopefully our modders will be aware of this discussion to perhaps include it, please, in the next update.
